E-MILL NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018

E-MILL NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018
RUNNING ON SUSTAINABLE VOLUNTEER POWER

Hello!

Please accept our apologies for the late delivery of this month’s E-Mill Newsletter, we have had a very busy and exciting Royal January!!

A ROYAL VISIT

Thank you Thank you Thank you to all the staff, volunteers, members and local community for helping The Old Saw Mill with preparations for the Royal visit on Wednesday 24th January 2018.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall received a welcome fit for a future king when they visited. On arrival, Prince Charles was given a glass of The Old Saw Mill’s apple juice, which he described as “very nice”.

During their visit, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall met the staff, volunteers, the people who donated goods and services to build the community cafe, some of the craft and arts groups, which regularly use The Old Saw Mill, the team who make the apple juice, the Christmas dinner team and the Meals on Wheels organisers.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall received a parting gift of a hamper of hand-made goodies.

Here are some of the pictures taken from this memorable day…
royal visit

Thank you to Linsey Perry, Head of Creative, Flowcrete Group Ltd for taking the pictures.

To view more pictures of this special day, come down to The Old Saw Mill and take a look at our slide show in the cafe.

MONTHLY GIFT

Monthly Gift is an initiative started by Congleton Women’s Forum to support other women in Congleton.
The unfair taxation on women’s products and the economic struggles women in our community face today, means women are having to choose between feeding their children or buying proper women’s health products.
Congleton Women’s Forum believe that no woman should have to choose between feeding her children and her own health. We are supplying women’s hygiene products free of charge to all women in Congleton.
For further information contact Sue Munro on 07534 510841

E-MILL NEWSLETTER 12th October 2017

Hello Subscribers!
All replies to this eMill will be going to Harriet, not Peter Aston. If you need to contact Peter directly his details are at the bottom of this email. Many Thanks!

Firstly a huge thank you is in order, to all the lovely people who attended our Macmillan Coffee Morning and helped us raise £142.05 for the fantastic cause! We had lots of fun playing Cake Bingo; Peter did a brilliant job as our bingo caller, I think he’s in the wrong job! Thank you also to everyone who made something delicious for us, I’m happy to say there were only crumbs left by the end of the day!

I’d like to please draw your attention to just some of our upcoming events:

Halloween Party – Tuesday 31st October
All ages are welcome, there will be plenty of games for everyone to enjoy, and delicious food included in the price of the ticket. There will be apple bobbing (of course), pumpkin painting, sweetie hunt, and much more!

Christmas Craft Fair – Saturday 11th November
We will be holding this event upstairs, anyone wishing to have a stall please reply to this email with details of what you’d like to sell and how much space you need. We are asking £10 per table, and anyone is welcome to come and sell anything they’ve made.

To see what other exciting things are happening in the coming weeks please look at the Events Section of this newsletter!

Until the end of October we have a slot in the Bags for Help scheme at Tesco. Please next time you’re in either of the Tesco stores in Congleton, ask for a blue token at the checkout and put it in our box. Winning will give us £4000 which will go into making our hub even better at supporting our community.

There are a few items we still need to ask you for, including book shelves, a cabinet suitable for storing children’s toys and books, and shelving units or cupboards. If you aren’t sure if you have something suitable then just pop in with a photo of you item, or send a photo of it to our Facebook page or email address so we can tell you if we can make use of it! We would also like to ask for old photos of Congleton that we can display around The Old Saw Mill.

We desperately want more volunteers to help in our cafe so if you can spare even just a couple of hours one day a week to do some washing up or waiting on, we’d be very grateful. The pay will be free membership, excellent company, and delicious free food! It’s hard to say no really!

CHRISTMAS
It never hurts to be too organised! We are now taking booking for Christmas lunches, please contact Harriet for a menu; you can directly reply to this email or pop into our cafe and ask for her.  We will be offering lunches from December 11th, and will be open until 7pm for bookings. We promise we’ll hold off on the Christmas music for a while yet……

Thank you to all those people who have been bringing apples to the Old Saw Mill and Astbury Mere, please keep up the hard work! We are also able to collect donations of apples from you if you are unable to bring them yourself for any reason. Pick up days will be on Tuesdays unless arranged otherwise.

We are bottling the cider from last year’s apples and also apple juice from this year’s harvest, as you have hopefully seen from the videos and pictures on our social media pages! This is for sale in the café at £2.50 per bottle.

We’re beginning to find businesses in the town who are willing to sell the juice or cider on our behalf. So if you have a business in town and would also like to sell our product please contact any of the numbers at the bottom of the newsletter.

Given that we are increasing our production as the apple harvest is more plentiful this year, we are anticipating having some storage issues. If anyone can offer us a place to store our bottled cider and apple juice, for example a storage unit or garage, we would be very happy to hear from you. Please contact Dewi Jones on 07554 990403 if you think you can help us!

Members offer this month is our freshly bottled apple juice or cider for just £1! As well as the usual 10% member discount on food & room hire.

Have you joined yet? If not follow the link to download or call into The old Saw Mill for an application form.

A SPECIAL VOLUNTEER PLEASE?

The 2 Peters are not the most capable on Facebook and the like and we’d love a Social Media volunteer who could spend perhaps a couple of hours a week keeping us up to date!

NEW DIRECTORS

The Old Saw Mill is becoming a very busy place as you’ll see from today’s eMill, we now have 2 paid cooks Alex and Yvonne and the café is busy every day. The 2 Peters need to clone at least another one! If you are interested, please contact either Peter and have a chat about what’s entailed!

Member News

The member’s gift for April will be a £3 discount on a lunch from our delicious menu, as well as your usual 10% member discount.

Have you joined yet? If not follow the link below or call in for an application form (Back River St).
For a membership form, click here.
Volunteers:

All volunteers are invited to become members as a reward for their hard work!

As victims of our own success we need to expand the OSM team. Can you spare a couple of hours each week to help us in the downstairs café?

Veg box scheme:

We have an opportunity to set up a veg box scheme of locally grown food and veg, if it’s something that might interest you, drop us an email or pop in and see us.

Parking:

Please keep in mind that there is no parking immediately outside Old Saw Mill. There is a small car park opposite, which is generally full and plenty of parking close by in Antrobus St. Car Park, Princess St. and Rope Walk Car Parks.

New Events

Come and celebrate International Women’s Day at the Old Saw Mill on 8th March from 10.00 – 12.00. We believe this is the first time that this has been acknowledged in this way in Congleton.

The event will also include the launch of “The  Monthly Gift” which is an initiative where women can drop-in and receive free hygiene products. These items are expensive and still subject to VAT and the costs can be problematic for women on low incomes. Since 2010, infections have risen markedly because women use substitute materials which are not hygienic.

Volunteer
We are looking for someone with bookkeeping skills to help us to manage the day to day finances along with liaising with our accountant to prepare monthly and annual accounts. If you think you have a few hours to spare each week we would love to hear from you. Please contact Peter, Pete or Anna.
Easter Lunch

Our Xmas Lunch was so successful, we are planning to have an Easter Lunch on 16th April, so if you know of anyone who would really appreciate a hearty meal then please get in touch.

Congleton Community Partnership – Get involved with the Old Saw Mill!

If you have visited the Old Saw Mill you will know what a fantastic facility it is and also appreciate the benefit it can offer to our local community in Congleton. To be successful we have to rely on a team of willing volunteers and donations of materials and equipment which have all contributed to what we have achieved so far. Congleton Community Co-Op

We want to move on to the next stage of our development by establishing an effective management structure and also involve as many people as we can in the project. We are therefore launching a membership scheme and are inviting you to become a member of Congleton Community Partnership.

For as little as £3 a month you can have a stake in the Old Saw Mill and at the same time get 10% discount in the cafe and a similar discount on some room bookings on production of your membership card.

Membership also entitles you to attend our board meetings and elect member directors to the management board at the AGM. You may even wish to stand to be a director yourself! Alternatively you may just be happy to make a small financial contribution towards the development of the Old Saw Mill project, in order to help us achieve our aims.

You may have seen in the Chronicle an article about our plans to provide a “meals on wheels” visiting service for elderly people who live alone, rarely go out and may not have many visitors. Your contribution will help us to establish this valuable service.

If you would like to join us please complete the attached application form and give us back page 3 with your contact details on and retain the rest which includes details how you can make your membership payment.
We are really looking forward to hearing from you. If you have any further queries please contact us on:
co-op@theoldsawmill.org

or just call in for a chat and a cup of tea and one of Yvonne’s fantastic scones!

Latest News from Old Saw Mill

Congleton Old Saw Mill

A very big thank you to Peter Jackson, Retrograde, for getting everyone, or almost everyone, up to dance after their Christmas Lunch, with his songs’ extravaganza set from the 50/60/70/80s. A huge welcome and thank you too, to his brother, Alan, for his magical tricks, banter and bonhomie. What a team! We had a grand time.

Of course, none of this could have happened without the vibrant spirit of our volunteers.

So many people from our town gave up precious hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to help make this happen, so, in no particular order, our thanks go to, Kirsty and Tel; Dee and Chris; Mandy, Seb and Mark; Angie and Carol; Ethel and Anna R; Linda; Anna K; Audrey and Gordon; Sara, Brenda and Diane.

Thank you so much!

We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of sponsors for this event, some of whom have asked that should sponsorship money be left over from the Christmas lunch that we put it towards our next community dinner. There is, and yes, we shall, and since we have already been asked by a number of guests and volunteers about the next one: how about Easter?

Please let us have your ideas and thoughts.christmas-lunch

The team at Old Saw Mill are busy planning for four, or maybe five Community Get- Together dinners and events for 2017, so please come on board with your ideas.

In the meantime: we think the picture

says it all…

New Appointments

We have been busy building the Old Saw Mill team since Stewart left and we are very pleased to announce that Peter Ranson has joined us as a Director. Pete, as he prefers to be called, has a wealth of experience at hand and has ear-marked the installation of the commercial kitchen as one of his priorities. We are all keen to see this up and running and Pete will be overseeing this aspect of Old Saw Mill’s development straightaway. So, watch this space!

We are so pleased to announce that Yvonne Phillips, chef extraordinaire, has joined us and plans are already afoot to develop our cafe area. You will see such a difference when you next visit as Yvonne’s new ideas for the menu are on show now. Yvonne has planned sumptuous lunches and tasty treats, including flat breads, cakes and biscuits available fresh from the oven. See Yvonne’s feature boards when you next visit for lunch or a cuppa.

Patti Pinto, our secret gardener, has set up our new face book page. It’s up and running so please visit us on face book: The Old Saw Mill

Last but by no means least – as you would not be reading this without him! Dewi Jones has taken on board the new set-up and running of our new E-Mill newsletter. Please contact Dewi if you would like to add a friend or have enquiries at: jonesdewi@hotmail.co.uk

The last of the apples have been juiced, vatted and stored in the press room where they will stay for the next 6 – 12 months. Again, thank you to all of you who have contributed with fruit. A very big thank you to you, Charla, our Congleton High School work-place student, who has the weighty, wet and apple-whiffy process down to a fine art.  Well Done, Charla!

Thank you to all for giving your time.
